Walter Nicol was a Scotsman who settled in Louisiana and worked for a New Orleans lumber exporter. The collection is a diary, 14 September 1845-11 September 1849, describing Nicol's work; a militia organization in which he participated; friends and relations in Saint Helena and Livingston parishes, La., including his in-laws who were members of the Harvey family; a schooner trip to visit lumber plants at Pensacola, Fla.; railroad excursions; opinions on the Mexican War; and the death of his wife, children, other relations, and slaves in a steamboat accident.
